You actually hit on one of the newer techniques I've been using very effectively in the last year or so!

I very rarely publish an article the same day I write it (above not publishing late at night). The exceptions are those posts like this one because it's a timely post. But overall I generally wait a few days to re-read and edit it. I find that by waiting I somewhat forget the details of the text and therefore I don't gloss over it nearly as much. Plus being in a different frame of mind, I often make better improvements.

Very sound advice Steph. When I first started blogging I would write and publish within an hour, and eventually find enough mistakes to kick myself repeatedly.

Hi Matt,

It's sad how too often these types of mistakes happen because we're tired. I can't even count the number of times I've was trying to resolve some weird programming bug late at night only to finally give up after hours and go to bed, only to wake up the next morning with the answer popping into my head within minutes of looking at the code.

Often it's a good idea to just stop and take a break, even if it means waiting until the next day.

I'll never forget coming in one morning when my boss and another colleague had pulled an all-nighter (it was on a different part of the project to my work so I didn't need to try and be a hero).

They were wondering why the machinery they were using wasn't working - it turned out that the key that had to be turned to the right position before the machine would work had been knocked to "off". They would have found this straight away if they had not been so tired - as it was they wasted at least an hour trying to figure it out.
